A bomb in a parked car exploded on a street lined with market stalls in this city’s Shaab district early Thursday afternoon, killing 16 and wounding 35, mostly women and children, according to the Ministry of Interior.
The street had been opened to car traffic only a month ago.
While the death toll was high, it could have been much higher if the bomb had gone off a few hours earlier. It detonated at 1 p.m., when most vendors, shop owners and shoppers had gone home for lunch.
The bombing was the second major attack in the Baghdad area this week, after a bombing in Abu Ghraib on Monday that left at least nine dead.
