Large and powerful Hurricane Ike`s fury has come ashore along the Texas Gulf Coast, and is spreading rain, tropical storm and hurricane-force wind gusts across eastern Texas. Eye of Ike is beginning to move away from the Houston area.

If they did not leave, residents along the coast should not venture outside, even in calm weather this morning. Across inland portions of metro Houston, residents should hunker down for Ike`s wrath.Hurricane Ike Satellite ImageHurricane Ike Storm Track MapHurricane Ike Wind Speed Probability MapHurricane Ike Current Status

Hurricane Ike is becoming stronger as it moves into the warm, Gulf of Mexico waters. The next stop on Ike’s destructive tour could be the U.S. Gulf Coast by the end of the week, possibly as a major 111-mph hurricane.

Ike, even though it is exiting Cuba, will still bring a bit of destructive weather tonight, generally in the form of heavy, flooding rains, damaging winds and battering surf. A bit of Ike`s rain and wind, although significantly less than what Cuba has experienced, will continue across the Florida Keys tonight.

Ike has already produced widespread damage across Cuba since late Monday. The island government is reporting at least four deaths, 18 injuries and widespread destruction to homes, especially across the eastern half of the nation.

Over the weekend, the hurricane was highly destructive in the Turk and Caicos Islands as well as Haiti and the Dominican Republic. More than 300 people dead have been reported in Haiti following the wrath of Ike.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for both the western provinces of Cuba and for the Florida Keys from west of the seven mile bridge west to Dry Tortugas.Hurricane Ike Satellite ImageHurricane Ike Storm Track MapHurricane Ike Wind Speed Probability MapHurricane Ike Current Status

Hurricane Ike is an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane as it continues its march over the open waters of the western Atlantic. As it moves west, it could present major problems for the Bahamas, Florida and the U.S. Gulf Coast early next week, possibly as a major category 3 or 4 hurricane.

The forecast and computer models are fairly consistent with the forecast path of Ike moving a bit southwest north of the Greater Antilles through the early part of the weekend. However, there are a few differences in the hurricane`s possible track early next week in a few of the computer models. Many of them have Ike going through the Bahamas and approaching the southeast Florida Coast. A few computer models have it turning it to the north at the Bahamas, while others send it across the southern Bahamas and into eastern Cuba. Nearly all models maintain Ike as a major hurricane through the weekend.

It is still way too early to determine Ike`s exact path. WeatherBug meteorologists will be watching development over the next several days. This storm could have a significant consequence for Florida, the northern Caribbean and even the East Coast.
